Running Gear for Every Runner
By Eriani Doyel

If you are a runner, you may or may not be aware of all of the running gear available. You may say “I’ve got a shirt, shoes, and shorts, what else do I need?” The truth is, you may not need anything else, but there are some running gear extras that can make your run a much more enjoyable experience. Here are just a few:

GPS System: This may seem way overboard, but it really can be a helpful piece of running gear. It can tell you how far you have run, how long it took you to get there, and how far it is to your next destination. This is great for distance runners. You can also program some of them to remember your last running times and compare them to your current time.

Heart rate monitor: This piece of running gear is ideal for the runner who is trying to lose weight or to improve their cardiovascular fitness level. It will measure your heart rate, and some of them also will estimate the number of calories you are burning.

Sunglasses: This important piece of running gear protects your eyes from UV rays-but it can be annoying when they bounce around. The new sunglasses do not bounce around, they have extra safety features to limit damage and breakage and-the amazing thing-they also can have MP3 technology installed in them. You can have your tunes while you run without adding another piece of running gear.

Hydration pack: If you are an “old school” runner you may not carry water at all or you may carry a water bottle. A hydration pack is a terrific way to carry not only water with “hands free” portability, but it also can have storage pockets for some of your other running gear. You can carry up to 2 quarts of water or more depending on the length and climate of your run.

Little extras: If you have ever needed a first aid kit on a run, then you can find one that will fit on your shoelaces. There are several new types of energy bars, energy gels and energy drinks that may aid your performance.

Look at reviews and product descriptions in magazines or online to get an idea of things that might be helpful to you. Then, you can buy them online or go to a local sporting goods store or running store or even a department store to purchase them.
